Scannan na hEireann

With the return of Roddy Doyle's "The Snapper" on Irish television last week I couldnt help but think back on Irish film and I realised how good it actually is.

Ireland is particularly talented with its comedy, with "The Snapper" being the perfect example. What I love about Irish films (scannans) are the realistic side to them, the portrayal of a character's life in Irish film is so simplistic and depicts exactly how the Irish people live. Irish films are not overly dramatised and there are no Hollywood factors, just simple yet effective film making, no need for stereotypes and its the realistic style of Irish film that makes it so funny. Some Irish films that I really love are; "Spin the Bottle", "The Commitments", "The Van", "Inside I'm Dancing" etc. It's these sort of films that prove to people that were not all about leprechauns and sheep.

I personally think that Irish film deserves more recognition and is underrated. It is not all about the comedy, there are dramas such as "Veronica Guerrin" and "The Magdalene Sisters" that are based on true events which impacted the country greatly.

So I thought I would show some support for the famous scannans of Ireland that we are truely proud of.

Thanks for reading, ttyl.

My Top 10 Greatest Movie Villains

Their the characters we love to hate, the anti-hero with the hidden past and tormented mind. But with so many villains in cinema today, it is difficult to narrow it down to my 10 greatest, but I did it :). Here is my official "Top 10 Greatest Movie Villains" list and its more sinister than ever >:)

WARNING : May contain spoilers!!!!

10. Wicked Witch of the West - The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Despite the fact that this film was for a "general" audience, there is no denying that the Wicked Witch of the West was completely creepy. The green skin, the disgusting cackle and not to mention the flying monkeys... she was crazy and became the boogeyman for any child that layed eyes on "The Wizard of Oz". From the moment she uttered "I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too", she became historic. But we could all breath a sigh of relief when we heard her scream "I'm melting, I'm melting". But that doesn't mean she is melted from our memory.

9. Chucky - Child's Play Series (1988 - 2004)

Let's face it, dolls are creepy enough without the movement, speaking and oh yeah, the killing! So when "Child's Play" graced our screens in 1988, people began to look at dolls in a completely different light. Chucky, a small red-haired doll dressed up in dungarees, seemed harmless at first, then before we knew it he was hacking people to pieces. Chucky has also managed to raise a family in the sequels and influence them all into his mind games and create a killing cult. So because of his truly evil nature Chucky manages to make it on to the list.

8. Dr. Evil - Austin Powers Series (1997 - 2002)

Ok so maybe not that scary, but what is great about Dr. Evil is that he is a humorous representation of what villains are about. If a villain usually messes up, they get angry or decide to kill a few people, but Dr. Evil undermines himself and says what Hollywood's villains are really saying to themselves. He is unsuccessful in almost any plan he creates and we take sincere enjoyment in watching him fail. Dr. Evil may not be truly evil but he deserves to be included in the greatest movie villains of all time.

7. Michael Myers - Halloween Series (1978 - 2009)

Silent but violent, Michael Myers is the one true slasher killer that stands among the rest. With a tormented childhood and troubled past Myers has no mercy for anyone that steps in his path. Shielding his identity from the world and causing havoc wherever he goes, Michael Myers is truly terrifying, making Halloween the night we should definitely not make plans outside the home.

6. Voldemort - Harry Potter series (2001 - 2011)

Without the Dark Lord, Harry Potter would never have become who he is. Voldemort, a snake-faced guy with a voice like ice. He will do anything it takes to kill a teenager, that has got to be scary for anyone. His desperation to kill Harry Potter is what makes him frightening and the fact that he can kill you in the blink of an eye if you irritate him in the slightest. To sum it up Voldemort is pretty much undefeatable.

5. Sauron - Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001 - 2003)

The creator of the one ring and the reason why Middle Earth is crawling with the bad guys. Even when the eye of Sauron is in command, he is still not to be messed, whether it is through the use of torture or temptation, he always manages to get what he wants, except the one thing he created. Through the manipulation he is a dominant force not to be reckoned with.

4. Freddy Kreuger - Nightmare on Elm Street series (1984 - 2010)

He lurches in your dreams making them a reality, even if you pinch yourself to wake up its painful. You can't run or hide and worst of all you need to stay awake. Reality and nightmares become the same thing. Freddy Kreuger's razor sharp blades cut deep into the mind of the viewers and begins to mess with their thoughts throughout his nightmarish acts. He has caused some to consider going to sleep.

3. The Joker - The Dark Knight (2008)

Psychotic, insane, deranged, dangerous are all words that could be used to describe the Joker. He lives life without the use of rules and hasn't a care for anyone but himself. His psychopathic actions and words are entertaining at times and at others just plain evil. His mission to unveil Batman have been unsuccessful. He takes no interest in money only the suffering of others, which is why he is number 3 on the list.

2. Darth Vader - Star Wars series (1977 -2005)

With the black helmet, cloak and deep breathing, we can all reminisce to the "Luke, I'm your father" moment. Darth Vader may have missed out on the number 1 spot but he is one of the most memorable villains of all time. He is an evil yet tragic character who manages to redeem himself in the end and win us over. He is also pretty cool considering he is half human, half robot. When we think of Star Wars, we think of Darth Vader.

1. Hannibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon (1991 - 2002)

So here we are at the number 1 spot and it is none other than Hannibal (the cannibal) Lecter. Despite only having 14 minutes in "Silence of the Lambs" when the screen time was added up, Lecter never failed to creep us out. Even though he was locked up in a cage, that didnt prevent him from being absolutely terrifying beyond belief. Whether it be the description of him eating a person or visually seeing him eating a person, the cannibalistic tendencies are enough to make the hair on anyone's neck stand tall. Hannibal also has the habit of feeding people brain which is quite an uncomfortable situation to imagine being in. Anthony Hopkins portrayed this gruesome character in 3 movies that still leave us feeling quite disturbed and nauseas. He is without a doubt the most memorable villain and also most realistic out of the top 10.

So there you have it the Top 10 Greatest Movie Villains. Comment on your opinion and if you have any suggestions feel free to write them below.

Til next time :)
